The Central government on Monday told Parliament that a total of 994 properties across the country have been reported to be illegally encroached by Waqf, with Tamil Nadu alone reporting the highest number of such
properties at 734. In a written reply to questions by Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader John Brittas, the Ministry of Minority Affairs, citing information available on Waqf, said there are 872,352 immovable and 16,713 movable Waqf properties registered under the Waqf Act in the country.
"As per the information available, 994 properties have been reported to be illegally encroached upon," Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said in a reply. The ministry further said that out of a total of 994 such properties across the country,
Tamil Nadu has reported the maximum number of 734 properties being alienated, followed by Andhra Pradesh at 152, Punjab at 63, Uttarakhand at 11 and Jammu and Kashmir at 10.
