Tahawwur Rana, accused of 26/11 Mumbai terror attack, has filed an emergency stay petition in the US Supreme Court to avoid extradition to India. He has claimed in his petition that if he is sent to India, he will be 'tortured' there and he will not survive. Earlier, on January 21, the US Supreme Court rejected his appeal, while the lower court and the US administration have already approved his extradition.

Tahawwur Rana's argument and demand for stay on extradition to India

Tahawwur Rana, a Canadian citizen of Pakistani origin, has approached the US Supreme Court to avoid extradition to India. He said in his petition that he will have to face 'extreme torture' in India and he will not be able to survive there for long. Also, he argued that he could be treated unjustly in India for being a Muslim of Pakistani origin.

Rana's lawyers requested the court to stay the process until his extradition was reconsidered. However, earlier on January 21, the US Supreme Court rejected his appeal, clearing the way for India to proceed with the extradition process.

Tahavvur Rana's role in Mumbai attack

Tahavvur Rana is accused of being an accomplice in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack in 2008. The Indian government has sought his extradition for his involvement in this attack. 174 people were killed and many others were injured in this attack.

Rana is accused of assisting his friend David Headley (whose real name was Dawood Gilani). Headley was an American citizen, whose father was Pakistani. US agencies arrested him in October 2009.

Rana knew that Headley had deep connections with Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and had provided Headley with fake documents. With the help of these documents, Headley came to India and did a recce of potential terrorist hideouts in Mumbai. The 26/11 attack was carried out by Pakistan-based terrorist organization Lashkar-e-Taiba.

Will Tahawwur Rana be extradited to India?

If the US Supreme Court rejects this new appeal of Rana as well, he may soon be sent to India. He has serious terrorism-related cases registered against him in India and is likely to get a harsh sentence.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump's administration had also given the green signal to his extradition. The Indian government is constantly trying to bring him to India as soon as possible so that he can be punished for his crimes.

26/11 Mumbai attack accused Tahawwur Rana has made every possible effort to avoid extradition to India. But the US justice system has not been in his favour so far. If his appeal is rejected again, India may soon get a chance to complete his extradition process. There is strong evidence against him in Indian courts, which may lead to a harsh punishment for him.
